FlightSafety International is to provide pilot, maintenance and dispatcher training for FedEx Express as it introduces ATR 42s to replace Fokker F27s used in feeder operations. Empire Airlines and Mountain Air Cargo, which will begin operating the ATR 42s on behalf of FedEx in January, will be provided with initial, recurrent and upgrade pilot training by FlightSafety, as well as technician and dispatcher training.
FedEx is acquiring 19 ATR 42s from American Eagle and eight from Continental Airlines to replace its fleet of 35 F27 feeder freighters. The first aircraft are undergoing modification, although FedEx will use the existing baggage door rather than install a large cargo door. The US package carrier is seeking more ATR 42s and could supplement these with larger ATR 72s, possibly with a cargo door.
