A Nippon Cargo Airlines Boeing 747-200 was damaged when its No 1 engine hit the ground during a 17 May attempted landing at Hong Kong's Kai Tak Airport. After the captain had elected to go-around, the aircraft returned for a safe landing 17min later, according to Kai Tak air traffic control (ATC). Within 3min of the engine-strike incident, an Asiana flight landed, followed by two other flights, before ATC suspended flying for 8min while a runway surface-check was carried out. The damaged engine was removed at Kai Tak for inspection.
