LUCAS AEROSPACE is to provide an emergency power-generating system (EPGS) to be flight-tested in an F-16 modified by Lockheed Martin to demonstrate power-by-wire flight controls for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The unit will be supplied under the JSF Integrated Subsystems Technology demonstrator programme.
The EPGS is an oil-cooled 15kW, 270V DC generator with a separate control unit, which will provide flight-critical power in the event of a loss of main electrical power on the modified F-16. Lucas Aerospace Power Systems will develop the unit, with flight qualification scheduled for the first quarter of 1998.
Integration of subsystems is expected to reduce the size, weight and cost of the JSF. Lucas says that its EPGS will contribute by providing higher voltage, resulting in a smaller and lighter system.
