Matra Marconi Space (MMS), Alenia Spazio and DaimlerChrysler's space division (Dasa) aim to complete the formation of new space company Astrium before the end of the year.
Astrium, which will become part of Aerospatiale Matra, will be active in space sectors other than that of launchers.
That business area remains a separate concern under the Aerospatiale Matra umbrella. Aerospatiale's satellite business is now a part of Alcatel Espace.
Dasa will be on board "within weeks" and Alenia by the end of the year, according to MMS chief executive Armand Carlier, who will also be the new company's chief executive.
