There was unanimous approval from the packed aerospace industry audience at the Shangri-La Hotel last night as Jean Pierson, the president and chief executive of Airbus Industrie, was named as the Aerospace Personality of the Year.

Pierson, who retires from Airbus at the end of next month, has been credited as the driving force behind Airbus's emergence as a world class competitor. As the company celebrates its 25th year it is also celebrating a record sales performance. And it was this leadership that was recognised with the premier industry award. In a televised speech, Pierson said he was delighted with the prize.

Guests at the Flight International-backed awards ceremony were also entertained by the China State Circus. There was great local celebration as several major winners came from the Asia-Pacific region.
