ISRAELI MISSILE manufacturer Rafael has confirmed that it is working on a beyond-visual-range active-radar air-to-air missile seeker and a dual-mode seeker combining active-radar and imaging infra-red seeker technologies.

The company says that it is using its own funds to work on the dual-mode programme, although the Israeli air force is understood to have a requirement for a next-generation active-radar missile.

Rafael is looking at using a dual-mode seeker for extended-range engagements with the imaging sensor being used in the "end game" for final target identification and tracking, along with improved counter-measures resistance.
