Singapore Airlines (SIA) has opened the world's longest non-stop commercial air route, between Singapore and Los Angeles. Daily services were launched on 3 February and the flights are operated with Airbus A340-500s seating 181 passengers in two-class configurations.

The first 14,077km (7,609nm) flight from Singapore took 14h 42min - more than an hour less than expected due to favourable tailwinds. The return flight is expected to take around 18h 30min.

The Singapore-Los Angeles route is 1,000km longer than the previous record route between Hong Kong and New York.

SIA plans to launch an even longer service, between Singapore and New York, on 28 June. It hoped to begin flights in August but brought plans forward.
