Smiths Aerospace has strengthened its position on the Northrop Grumman X-47B J-UCAS (Joint Unmanned Combat Air System) programme. At the heart of the systems provided are the vehicle management computers (VMCs), acting like the vehicle's central nervous system. The JUCAS VMCs are the backbone of the aircraft's computers, networks, and interfacing electronics, and will host all of the avionics, flight controls and utilities functions. Smiths will integrate third party supplier-developed applications and associated software onto the VMC in its role as first-tier integrator
