Taiwan’s Aerospace Industrial Defence Corporation (AIDC) and Bell Helicopter plan to sign a contract in the next few weeks to equip Taiwan’s fleet of AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters with new avionics and communications equipment.

Negotiations started last year, but the programme needs approval from the US government. The upgrade will bring Taiwan’s fleet of about 60 AH-1Ws up to US Marine Corps configuration, but some US equipment, such as radios, will not be included because they are not exportable. AIDC last year won a contract from the Taiwanese government to maintain its AH-1W fleet.
