Brazilian aircraft overhaul company VEM has secured US FAA certification to perform heavy maintenance on Boeing 777 twinjets.

The Rio de Janeiro-based company already has an extensive list of approvals and, over the past year, has added FAA and European Aviation Safety Agency certification for the Airbus A300-600 and A310.

VEM’s 777 approval gives it clearance to perform work on practically the entire range of Boeing aircraft, from the 727 upwards. President Filipe Morais de Almeida says the certification “strengthens an opening to the US market”.

Formerly the maintenance division of Brazilian carrier Varig, VEM is controlled by TAP Portugal.
