The Farnborough flying control committee's concentration on safety was brought into sharp relief last Wednesday when the IAR-99 Soim, from Romania, suffered an engine problem - believed to have been a flame-out - while validating its display for the show over the airfield.

Exhibition director Peter Taylor says: "The Soim was being flown through a specific manoeuvre, which we didn't particularly like the look of, when it had an engine malfunction. I can't confirm that it was a flame-out.

"We discussed the problem with the crew, the display programme was modified and the aircraft was put through a re-validation flight with no further problems."
