Sir - I agree with the conclusions drawn in the article "Is the worst over?" (Flight International, 6-12 August, P30) relating to consolidation and collaboration in Russian aviation.
These actions are in line with Western practice and are essential for commercial success.
The point not made, however, is about funding military technology. History shows that a "superpower" can be clearly identified relative to the technology demonstrated by its military products. There is no doubt that Russia is aware of this, and that funding will be forthcoming to ensure that Russia maintains her role. This intent is borne out by the insistence on the initial rationalisation of the industry.
Another point consistently overlooked is that funding invested in new projects is channelled into skilled jobs.
