The Israeli ministry of transport is to issue a build, operate and transfer tender for the upgrade of Haifa Airport. The $430 million project entails lengthening the runway from 1,200m (4,000ft) to 2,400m - 400m of which will be built in the sea - and constructing a new terminal for international services. Around $280 million will be supplied by the Israeli government, with the remainder coming from the constructor, which will operate the airport commercially for 30 years.
Sitia Airport in Crete, Greece, has extended its runway to cater for international flights. The €30 million ($29 million) investment will be followed by further runway lengthening next year and a new apron and terminal building to be completed in 2005.
Spain's Malaga Airport is spending €300 million ($292 million) on a new 14-gate 17,200m2 (185,000ft2) terminal, due for completion in 2007, and refurbishing its existing terminal. A new control tower will be finished this year. Tourist traffic is expected to double by 2015. Spanish airport operator Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea is investing €472 million ($459 million) to upgrade Spain's airports and air traffic systems by 2007. Madrid Barajas Airport, Barcelona El Prat, Palma de Majorca and Malaga will receive the bulk of the funds.
