Boeing has announced that Turkish Airlines intends to order 40 787-9s.

The order will be finalised at a later date, says Boeing, and no engine choice was mentioned in a press statement from the manufacturer.

"The 787 Dreamliner is the most technologically advanced airplane in the world," says the carrier's chairman chairman M. İlker Aycı. "Our intent to purchase these Dreamliners is to meet the demand for widebody airplanes at the third [Istanbul] airport, further strengthen our fleet capacity on the 100th anniversary of the [Turkish] Republic, and to enhance passenger satisfaction."

Istanbul's new airport, which will replace Attaturk International airport as the city's major gateway facility, is scheduled to open in late October 2018.

Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that Turkish Airlines operates 293 aircraft, including 125 Boeing jets. It also has orders for 75 737 Max 8s and 9s, and two 777-200LR Freighters.

In addition to the order announcement, Boeing and the Turkish government announced a major strategic framework to align the interests of the country's aerospace sector with the US manufacturer. The tie-up will focus on research, engineering, and skills development for government, airlines and other companies in Turkey's aerospace sector.
