The pilot of an Israeli air force Lockheed Martin F-16I "Sufa" was killed when his aircraft caught fire and crashed during an attempted landing at Ramon air base in the south of the country on 5 October.

A first landing attempt had been aborted as a result of an asymmetric load issue, with the strike aircraft still carrying weapons under one wing after performing an air strike on a Hamas target in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket launch.

The crew of the two-seat F-16I ejected during the second attempted landing. The pilot died, while the navigator was taken to hospital after sustaining injuries.

An air force investigation has been launched following the incident.
