Helicopters Spain has decided to buy 24 Eurocopter Tigers for €1.3 billion ($1.4 billion) in preference to Boeing AH-64D Apache attack helicopters, defence minister Federico Trillo-Figueroa says. The decision is part of a €4.17 billion modernisation plan for Madrid's armed forces adopted at a council of ministers meeting on Friday. Spain has been putting the decision off for over a year on political grounds and had even recently renewed an option to lease six Apaches (Flight International, 26 August-1 September). Eurocopter is offering Spain the HAP combat support version of the Tiger, based on the Australian variant.
