MAPO says it plans to fly the 1.44 prototype of the 1.42/MFI stealth fighter this year. The aircraft missed its original deadline of early March announced in mid-January. MAPO first deputy general designer Vladimir Barkovskiy says the company is running systems tests before it starts taxiing tests. The 1.42 - a canard, twin-engined fighter intended to cruise above Mach 1 without resorting to afterburner use - is claimed to be Russia's equivalent to the Lockheed Martin/Boeing F-22.
