The oil majors need to do more regarding the ramping up of the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry, in the view of Virgin Atlantic chief executive Shai Weiss.
Speaking during the Airlines 2021 event in London on 22 November, Weiss expressed his conviction that “the aviation industry alone cannot be responsible for the development of sustainable aviation fuels”.
Indeed, “oil majors should have been on this panel”, he says.
Weiss calls on such companies to “take up a just position” on SAF.
While airlines are unavoidably the “poster child” when it comes to public perception of who needs to do more on sustainability, the challenge is “not just multi-generational, it’s a multi-party issue”, he states.
