SMITHS INDUSTRIES Aerospace has been selected by Aerospatiale to supply datalink-control display units (DCDUs) for Airbus airliners.

The deal, worth up to £30 million ($47 million) over 12 years, will lead to the first application of active-matrix liquid-crystal displays in Airbus aircraft. The displays form part of plans to implement Future Air Navigation System technology on new-build aircraft, and retrofit it to existing ones. Air-traffic-control messages will be passed to aircraft via datalink, and displayed on the 90 x 70mm DCDUs.
