Elevator flutter at about Mach 0.9 is believed to have led to the 30 December 1994, fatal in-flight break-up of a Bede Jet BD-10. The right elevator hinge is thought to have failed, resulting in full upward deflection of the left elevator, pitching the aircraft up and causing the right wing-spar to fail.
