Kollsman has teamed with Israel's El-Op Electro-optic Industries to pursue development of a missile countermeasures system for airliners. The multi-spectral infrared countermeasures (MUSIC) system uses a directional laser to jam the incoming heat-seeking missile's infrared seeker. There is "no specific timetable" for development of the system, says Itzhak Hevrony, Kollsman vice-president commercial and air transport avionics. The company plans to respond to the US Department of Homeland Security's request for proposals for a missile-countermeasures system for airliners, he says.
