A Northwest Airbus 310 made an emergency landing shortly after takeoff this weekend because of a birdstrike.

The Detroit-bound flight was forced to return to John Wayne airport in California minutes after take-off when pilots heard a noise in the right engine.

The aircraft landed safely and without injury to any of the 98 passengers who were re-routed to other flights. Engineers found the bird remains and determined a new engine was needed.
