Northwest Airlines has struck a deal, which will give it effective control over Mesaba Aviation, a Northwest Airlink carrier which provides feeder services into the Minneapolis and Detroit hubs. Northwest will achieve control by raising its stake in Mesaba's parent, Airtran, to nearly 30%. In exchange, Northwest will drop objections over development of the low-cost Airtran Airways operation set up in mid-1994.
