The Russian air force has deployed three modernised Sukhoi Su-24s to the Edelweiss firing range in Kyrgyzstan for trials of new precision weapon systems. The exact configuration of the aircraft is not certain, but Sukhoi has displayed a model offered to the Russian air force and export customers.
Internal upgrades include a SV-24 computer, a terrain-reference navigation system, CRT radar display, liquid-crystal displays, a digital moving-map generator, ILS-31 head-up display and A737 GPS, mission planning system with weapon-aiming algorithms, and a mission data transfer cartridge system.
Structural upgrades should increase airframe lifetime by 2,400h and provide compatibility with a range of new weapons, including TV-guided bombs and a helmet-mounted sight for the Vympel R-73 air-to-air missile.
