Thailand's government has finally acknowledged what most in the industry have known for some time – the opening of Bangkok's new international airport will be delayed.

The government has long insisted the New Bangkok International Airport, commonly known as Suvarnabhumi, will open on 29 September. It has repeatedly rejected suggestions from many observers, including IATA, that it will be late, with some estimates putting the delay at up to two years.

Airports of Thailand (AoT) admits the facility is now expected to open about six months later than planned, around March 2006, with a firm date due to be announced soon.
